Dan has been my Mandarin tutor for over 2 years and I cannot recommend him highly enough. I have been studying Chinese on and off for over 10 years and Dan is the man that made it all click. Far from the tedious rote learning of many a Chinese teacher, Dan ensures that every lesson is engaging and relevant, immediately usable and deployable in real-life situations. In my own case, in little over a year I went from unable to hold a basic conversation to solo-travelling in interior China – where no foreigner usually dares to tread! Apart from having excellent command of Mandarin, Dan’s classes have also been the most enjoyable of any subject I have studied, naturally due to his great sense of humour and strong personability. Both of my teenage sons have been learning Chinese with Daniel.
They had previously tried several native Chinese-speaking teachers, but the lessons didn’t go well and only made them dislike the language even more. I was initially hesitant about whether a native English-speaking teacher could teach Chinese effectively, but I decided to give it a try.
I’m so glad I did. Both sons absolutely love Daniel’s classes. They never complain about going and continue attending even after completing their IB. Their grades have improved dramatically — one from a 5 to a 7, and the other to a 6.
They tell me it’s because Daniel really understands the difficulties students face when learning Chinese and explains everything clearly. They also say he’s genuinely nice and makes the lessons fun.

Daniel is by far the most perceptive, understanding and upbeat tutor I have ever met. His adaptable approach to his sessions makes each one more constructive and enjoyable than the last thanks to his knack for comedy and great sense of humor. I regret only having his teaching for half of my A Level Chinese course because with him, Chinese very quickly became my favourite subject out of my three choices. He reignited my spark for Mandarin that I believed was lost after being taught by a native Chinese speaker. Whilst some people might believe that learning with a native is always better, Daniel is proof that this is not the case. He has an extremely deep grasp of Chinese supported by both cultural knowledge and a profound understanding of what it is like to learn as a non-native. I would recommend him a thousand times over to anyone who wants to learn Chinese from any level.

Daniel is a fantastic tutor - thoroughly knowledgeable and attentive, while always empathic, perceptive and engaging. His understanding of Mandarin is fantastic, and he is able to provide deep and complete explanations of concepts in the language, often with cultural or contextual insight that further helps one to understand and retain the material. He has an impressive ability to respond and adapt his teaching methods according to the needs of the sudent, whether thats to reinforce weaker areas, keep material interesting, or to introduce new and complex constructions.
